Opening a business

Opening a general retail establishment can be an exciting and overwhelming experience.

By providing you with this information and details on the expectations of each department, our intent is to help you realize your goals of owning and maintaining a successful good establishment in the City of Racine.

Generally retaul establishments are acceptable in all business districts in the City. However, depending on the business district there may be additional permits required. 

 Building Department

The City of Racine Building Department will assist in determining the suitability of your chosen location.

Location

The Building Department can provide guidance on permitting and help direct you to the appropriate departments. The Building Department is located on the third floor of City Hall.

Special Exceptions

• Are you planning to locate on Douglas Avenue or State Street or in Downtown, Uptown or West Racine? If so, you’ll need to discuss your project with the Department of City Development before proceeding.
• Are you planning to operate a consignment or secondhand retail store? If so, you’ll need additional permits. Contact the City Clerks office for the appropriate permit applications.
